FIFA has officially confirmed the appointment of the referee for the crucial clash between Uruguay and Spain, which will take place in the third round of the group stage of the 2026 World Cup. American referee Ismail Elfath, aged 44, will be responsible for refereeing. This will be the second World Cup for the referee, who made his debut at the tournament in 2022, in Qatar. Elfath has extensive international experience, having refereed in competitions such as the Tokyo Olympic Games (where he was in charge of the duel between Spain and Argentina), the Copa América, the Club World Cup and the MLS. Born in Casablanca and emigrating to the United States at age 18, he has a decade-long career as a FIFA official. In this tournament, this Group H clash will be his second appearance, having officiated the game between the Netherlands and Japan on June 14th. The decisive match, important for the future of Luis de la Fuente's team in the tournament, will be held next Friday, June 26, at the Guadalajara Stadium, in Mexico, at 6:00 pm local time.
