Juventus striker, Conceição rejects the super-sub label and praises his father Sérgio as ‘main advisor’
Juventus player Francisco Conceição discusses his father's influence and the World Cup match against Uzbekistan, while rejecting the label of being just a super-sub.
Francisco Conceição, Juventus striker, got emotional when talking about the influence of his father, Sérgio, and bowed to Fabio Cannavaro before the Portugal team's second game in the World Cup against Uzbekistan. At a press conference in Palm Beach, Conceição was asked about Cannavaro, current Uzbekistan coach and former teammate of his father on the national team. "We don't talk about Cannavaro, but I know he was a great player, a legend," he said.
The player also defended himself against the idea that he is only seen as an option to enter at the end of matches. "I want to be known simply as Francisco Conceição. If someone talks about a player who only comes on for the last 10 or 15 minutes, that's not quite the truth. I play for Juventus in Serie A and have been a regular starter for my club."
On the possibility of making history as the first Portuguese father-son duo to play in a World Cup, Conceição reflected: "My father told me that one small mistake could compromise everything, and that's exactly what we want to avoid. My father is my main advisor. There's no one better to talk to about football. He helps me a lot both in football and in my personal life."
