World Cup 2026 is already the highest scoring in history
The 2026 World Cup has already broken the record for goals scored in a single edition, with 173 goals, surpassing Qatar's previous record of 172 goals.

During the group stage of the 2026 World Cup, the record for goals in a single edition was broken. In the match between Türkiye and the United States, goal number 173 was scored, one more than the previous record, set four years ago in Qatar. Thanks to the exciting final game between Argentina and France (3-3), which took place in the last edition, Qatar 2022 surpassed the goalscoring records of 1998 in France and 2014 in Brazil, both with 171 goals. Due to the new structure of the competition, which resulted in an increase in the number of matches, it was already expected that the goalscoring record would be broken in this edition. To date, this record was achieved during the 57th match of the tournament. The scorer of the historic goal was Auston Trusty, who opened the scoring for the United States against Turkey just two minutes into the game. With 47 matches still to be played, the goal tally promises to increase significantly. If we just look at the average number of goals per game, the 1954 World Cup remains unbeatable, with an average of 5.38 goals per game.
