The Blues were hoping to make a new offer, as the club's intention is to reinforce the squad with more experienced players. However, it appears that Xhaka will not be going anywhere this summer. Initially, the midfielder was tempted by the possibility of reuniting with his former coach Xabi Alonso at Chelsea. Xhaka is currently on World Cup duty with Switzerland, who beat Algeria 2-0 to book a place in the last 16. The player joined Sunderland last summer from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal that could be worth up to £17 million.
