The current European champions, Spain, are in the round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With a dominant performance, La Roja defeated Austria 3-0 this Thursday, with two goals from Mikel Oyarzábal and one from Pedro Porro. The match was held at SoFi Stadium, in Los Angeles, and now Spain awaits the winner of the clash between Portugal and Croatia, which takes place later (8pm, Brasília time).

Spain have maintained an impressive run of 34 games without losing since March 2024. Real Sociedad forward Oyarzábal shone once again, opening the scoring after an assist from Cucurella and closing the score in the 89th minute with a goal from a perfect cross from the new Real Madrid full-back. He now has 13 goals in 12 international appearances this season, four of which have come in the World Cup. With this, Oyarzábal equaled Míchel and Butragueño in the number of goals in World Cups, behind only David Villa.

After a difficult group stage, including a goalless game against Cape Verde and a below-expected performance against Uruguay, Spain did what was expected. They dominated Austria from the start and had enough chances for a rout. Pedro Porro's goal, in the 66th minute, was also a highlight, as it was his first for the national team. Oyarzábal, with his second goal, consolidated the exceptional performance of a team that seems to have "arrived".

Unai SimĂłn, the national team's goalkeeper, set a new record for minutes without conceding goals in the history of World Cups. He surpassed Iker Casillas, who had 476 minutes, and Walter Zenga, who held the previous record with 517 minutes. SimĂłn's run began in the group stage against Japan and has now reached 519 minutes, including four complete clean sheets since then.
