Liverpool's title hopes depend on a decisive signing
Liverpool's performance this season has raised concerns about their title hopes, with an urgent need for a new defender and general squad improvements to compete effectively in the Premier League.
Liverpool have had a disappointing season, and their title hopes are at risk. The Anfield team failed to play good football, with Arne Slot's tactics failing to get the best out of his players. Forwards like Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah were forced to act as creators rather than finishers, which was contrary to what Jurgen Klopp had established as his best style of play.
With this lack of performance, speculation about a new major restructuring of the squad began to gain strength. While several areas of the team need improvement, one sector in particular requires urgent attention: defense. Liverpool need to sign at least one defender this summer transfer window.
The team has already added Jeremy Jacquet to its squad for the 2026-27 season, but that doesn't solve the problems at the back. If Ibrahima Konate decides to renew his contract and stay at Anfield, it could be argued that the team already has enough depth, especially with Giovanni Leoni returning from injury. However, with the Frenchman's departure and Joe Gomez's future uncertain, signing a new defender becomes Liverpool's top priority.
Virgil van Dijk is a guaranteed starter, but with Leoni and Jacquet never playing in the Premier League, it is uncertain whether they will fit into Andoni Iraola's plans. A number of defenders have been linked with a move to Anfield but, with the World Cup underway and Liverpool's target list not yet finalised, no concrete negotiations have taken place so far.
Finding a solid defender at a reasonable price is not easy, and many believe that Liverpool should have made a final push to sign Marcos Senesi following his departure from Bournemouth. However, as Tottenham survived relegation and have already reached an agreement with the Argentine, other names such as Luka Vuskovic and Nico Schlotterbeck are now being linked to the club.
Liverpool need to fight for the Premier League title. If they are unable to significantly improve their performance next season, some serious questions will need to be raised. Fenway Sports Group has already released Slot, but changing coaches doesn't always solve problems. Several players in the starting squad will also need to raise their level of play, especially if they are to reach the final stages of the Champions League and challenge for the Premier League title. Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz will be under the spotlight after campaigns below expectations, and if they don't live up to it, the situation will be catastrophic.
No one knows what Iraola's tenure will be like, but if it's anything like his time at Bournemouth, Liverpool will be in good hands. However, hundreds of millions will need to be invested again as, without major new investment in the team, it is unclear how things will improve.
