Gattuso takes over or command from Lazio
Gennaro Gattuso was appointed as Lazio's new coach, replacing Maurizio Sarri following his departure. Gattuso had left the Italian national team after failing to qualify for the World Cup.
Gennaro Gattuso has been officially announced as Lazio's new coach, having stepped down from his position with the Italy national team in April following the team's elimination in their attempt to qualify for the World Cup. Under his leadership, the Azzurri endured a disappointing campaign, being eliminated in the playoffs by Bosnia-Herzegovina, which meant that Italy became the first world champions to lose three consecutive World Cups. Before Gattuso, the team was under the command of Luciano Spalletti, but he took over midway and managed to win six of eight games, but elimination in the playoffs was a heavy blow.
Lazio said goodbye to Maurizio Sarri after a frustrating season in 2025-26, where the team finished ninth in Serie A and lost the Coppa Italia final to Inter 2-0, thus failing to qualify for European competitions.
The club expressed a warm welcome to Gattuso on their social media: "Benvenuto, Mister #AvantiLazio".
Before taking over at Lazio, Gattuso had remarkable spells at AC Milan and Napoli, as well as international experiences with Valencia in Spain and Marseille in France. Meanwhile, Sarri has already found a new job, accepting the role at Atalanta following the departure of Raffaele Palladino.
