Herbie Williams: Swansea City legend and former Welsh international passes away aged 85

Herbie Williams, a Swansea City great and former Wales international, has passed away aged 85. A native of Swansea, Williams joined the club as a 15-year-old in 1955 and played for the local team from 1958 until 1975. He racked up an impressive 513 league appearances, which ranks him as the third-highest player in terms of appearances in the club's history. In total, he played 608 games for Swansea, scoring 129 goals.


The club, which competes in the Championship, expressed its deep sadness at the death of "one of the club's most loyal servants". "A gracious and humble man, with a deep love and affection for Swansea - the city and the club - Herbie will be long remembered by all who knew him," Swansea City added.

Primarily playing as an inside forward, Williams was part of the Swansea team that, when still in the old Second Division, enjoyed a memorable run to the semi-finals of the FA Cup in the 1963-64 season. They made history by beating Liverpool at Anfield to progress to the semi-finals where they were beaten by Preston North End at Villa Park. Williams, who helped Swansea gain promotion from the fourth division in 1969-70, also wore the Welsh shirt on three occasions while playing for the club. After a brief period in Australia towards the end of his career, he returned to his hometown of Swansea.
