"This is for the people" - Beccacece and Plata celebrate Ecuador's progress in the World Cup


Coach Sebastian Beccacece dedicated Ecuador's progress to the round of 16 of the World Cup to "the people" following their dramatic victory over Germany. Ecuador managed to progress from the group stage for the second time in history – 20 years after the first – by overturning a deficit and beating the four-time world champions 2-1 in the last match of Group E. La Tri went behind on the scoreboard with Leroy Sane's goal after just two minutes, but quickly responded with Nilson Angulo, before Gonzalo Plata completed the comeback with 12 minutes remaining. That victory ensured Ecuador advanced as one of the best third-placed teams, and Beccacece was visibly emotional after the final whistle at the New York/New Jersey Stadium. "It's not about what this means for me; this is for the people," the coach said. "The players gave them this rating. Let us celebrate and enjoy it." Ecuador, who had failed to score in their first two games, managed to win a World Cup match from behind for the second time, having also done so against Honduras in 2014. "It was a very intense game. We know that Germany are one of the candidates to lift the trophy here," Plata added. "It was a very difficult game and we managed to take advantage of these two chances. In our previous two games, we were unable to do this and find the goal. Fortunately, the group's confidence was intact, and we were able to turn the situation around. We filled stadiums everywhere, our fans made us feel at home in each stadium. They deserve this more than anyone. Now, we go to the next stage even more hungry for glory."
