Jules Kounde comments on Lamine Yamal’s statements before a possible World Cup semi-final: ‘He speaks his mind’
Jules Kounde responds to Lamine Yamal about the possible semi-final between Spain and France, highlighting that ambition is more important than being considered a favorite.

A potential clash between Spain and France in the World Cup semi-finals is already generating plenty of discussion, and Barcelona defender Jules Kounde recently responded to comments made by teammate Lamine Yamal. The young Spanish international stated that he does not believe that France are superior to Spain and admitted that he would like to see the two teams face each other in the final stages of the 2026 World Cup. These statements understandably attracted attention, especially considering the recent history between the two European powerhouses, with Spain defeating France in the semi-finals of Euro 2024 and the UEFA Nations League. Now, Kounde has offered his perspective on the debate surrounding a possible duel between Spain and France. Speaking from France's training camp, the Barcelona defender admitted he understands Lamine Yamal's mentality and was not surprised by the young Spanish star's comments. Kounde praised the teenager's ambition but insisted that being considered a favorite at a major tournament doesn't mean much. "I know Lamine well. I know he is a very strong player, an ambitious boy who speaks his mind and says things as he sees them. The truth is that being the favorite in a competition doesn't mean much," he said, as reported by Mundo Deportivo. France have faced disappointment against Spain in recent years, losing 2-1 in the Euro 2024 semi-finals and suffering another defeat in the Nations League semi-final a year later when La Roja secured a thrilling 5-4 victory. Despite these defeats, the Barcelona full-back made it clear that France are not obsessed by their recent struggles against Spain. "It's true that, unfortunately, the last few games against Spain haven't gone as we expected. We know that, but that doesn't obsess me or cause me anguish." In addition to discussing Spain and Lamine Yamal, Kounde also addressed the criticism he received during the tournament. The Barcelona defender revealed that external opinions do not affect him, as he values more the trust shown by the coaching staff and his teammates. "To be honest, I don't read it. Sometimes I come across it, but frankly, I'm quite resistant to it. It's not something that worries me. I have the trust of the coach and my teammates, and for me that's what matters most." The French international also highlighted his belief in his own abilities and reiterated his determination to continue contributing positively to the national team. "I'm also very confident in myself. I know what I'm capable of, although it's up to me to prove it and make it available to the French team, which is what I always try to do. But I'm not worried about the criticism. I think I played well against Sweden, as did the whole team. Whether it was my best game, I don't know," he concluded.
