Football anti-discrimination organization Kick It Out said tougher sanctions needed to be implemented to punish discrimination in sport as the number of annual incidents reached a new record. According to data from the organization, 1,255 cases of discrimination were recorded in the 2025-26 season at all levels of English football, an increase on the 960 incidents the previous year.

"It was our first game while we were fasting, so we were hungry and I was a little less patient. When I was getting ready to go in, one of the fans said I should shave my beard and that I looked like a pedophile. One of them picked up a child aboutsix or seven years old and said 'I bet your wife is the same age as this child'."
Ali described the men who offended him as being in their sixties. "It's quite distressing, because they are older than my father. They are my grandfather's age and they felt comfortable standing there and making comments like that. The assistant referee heard the comments and told the referee, who, according to him, took no action. The police were eventually contacted and the fans were identified, but Ali was not informed of the outcome of the case.
Coach Mohammed Patel, who was on the bench during the match, said that although the opposing coaching staff apologized on behalf of the fans, he felt that the officials did not act as they should and should have removed the spectators who were shouting racist and Islamophobic abuse. Patel commented: "It was a really emotional day for us because the question we asked ourselves after that game was 'Why is this still happening?'. Some of the things that were said were absolutely horrible. In my opinion, more needs to be done from the top down. We are actively engaged and working with the local FAs to try and resolve this issue, but it needs to be mandated."
