Keeping up is harder than getting there

Athletic Club is preparing for next season, with changes to the coaching staff and renewals of important players, such as Rego, who had a good first season in football's elite.

Keeping up is harder than getting there

Today marks a month since Athletic played their last game of the season. It was on May 23rd at the Santiago Bernabéu. The Rojiblancos entered the field with nothing at stake, after the draw against Celta that ended the chances of a European qualification that few believed in.

It was already known that Edin Terzic would be the new coach, replacing Valverde. However, at the end of last week, it was confirmed that Yuri Berchiche renewed for another year, De Marcos will join the coaching staff to be the link with the players and Rego also renewed his contract until 2030. The Bilbao midfielder stood out in his first season in the elite, something always complicated, and his coach's confidence is evidenced by the fact that he was the only outfield player to play in all eight Champions League games.

We still don't know the plans of the board and the German coach regarding the squad. There are many players, especially in the midfield position, with up to seven players, not counting Canales and Unai Gómez, who can also play in front of the defense. Rego will face a double challenge when he reports to Lezama in less than two weeks - on July 6th - to undergo medical and physical examinations before starting training. The first challenge is to convince the new coach and, secondly, to consolidate himself in his second season as a lion. Keeping up is harder than getting there.
