The East South Coast Ambulance Service is bracing for an increase in emergency calls as temperatures rise and England play in the World Cup. During the busiest period of the May bank holiday, the service received more than 3,500 emergency calls per day, 30% more than normal. With high temperatures forecast until at least Thursday, a new wave of calls is expected due to England's game against Ghana on Tuesday night. Members of the public are advised to only call 999 in emergencies, helping to alleviate pressure on the ambulance service. For non-emergency situations, the public should call the NHS 111 service or speak to a community pharmacist. Fans attending the World Cup are advised to "plan ahead, stay hydrated with soft drinks and water, and ensure they return home safely", the service said. The Met Office has issued a red warning for extreme heat, covering parts of the Midlands, south-east Wales and southern England, with temperatures reaching 40C. The warning will be in effect from 09:00 GMT on Wednesday until 21:00 on Thursday.
