Tottenham sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle for £100

Tottenham Hotspur have just signed midfielder Sandro Tonali, who came from Newcastle United. The transfer value, which could reach up to £100 million, sets a new record for the London club. Tonali, 26, joins Spurs after three seasons with the Magpies, where he emerged as a key player after overcoming a 10-month ban for betting-related offenses imposed by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). Negotiations got off to a rocky start, with an initial bid of around £80 million being rejected by Newcastle. However, the parties reached an agreement, where Tottenham will pay £92.5 million in advance, in addition to £7.5 million in bonuses. "I'm very happy to be here," declared Tonali. He mentioned that although there was interest from other clubs, his decision to join Tottenham was immediate after an almost two-hour conversation with coach Roberto de Zerbi, where they discussed the club, the fans, the stadium and the style of play. Tonali had already faced Tottenham on a few occasions and was always impressed by the atmosphere created by the fans. "I can't wait for the season to start," added the new signing. His arrival joins that of Mateus Fernandes, who was also signed for a significant sum of £85 million from West Ham. The Italian player was acquired by Newcastle from AC Milan for £55 million in July 2023 and, following his suspension, he once again became a mainstay in the team, helping Newcastle win the Carabao Cup in 2025, which marked the team's first trophy in 70 years.  In a post on social media, Tonali said goodbye to Newcastle and his coach Eddie Howe, thanking him for the support he received and highlighting the importance of the city in his life. "This city gave me more than football. It gave me a home, moments I will cherish forever and people I will always be grateful for. Thank you for everything!" Tottenham manager De Zerbi praised Tonali as a "special player" and expressed his pleasure in working with him. "I have followed him for a long time, since his formation at Brescia, and I am very happy to have him in the team now. He has exceptional qualities and there is a lot of interest in Sandro, but he has been clear about his desire to join Tottenham, and our fans will love what he can bring to the team." Tottenham have had a busy summer, especially after finishing 17th in the Premier League, just two points above the relegation zone last season. In addition to the arrivals of Tonali and Fernandes, defenders Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi also arrived at the club as free agents. Together, the hires could add up to a total spend of up to £237 million. Under new squad cost ratio (SCR) rules, Tottenham can spend up to 85% of their revenue on player costs. In the club's last accounting (2024-25), salary and amortization costs were just 61%, which allows a significant margin for investments.
