Manchester United's Ugarte suffers serious knee injury during World Cup


Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte has spoken out after suffering a serious knee injury, which he described as "the most serious a football player can face". The injury occurred during the group stage match of the World Cup, in which Uruguay faced Spain. Ugarte, 25, will now face a lengthy recovery period, meaning he will not be available for the start of the 2026-27 Premier League season, scheduled for August 22 against newly promoted Hull City. This season he made 22 league appearances for United, who finished third and qualified for the Champions League, but started just eight of those matches. In all competitions, Ugarte neither scored nor assisted, and United were eliminated in the early stages of the EFL Cup and FA Cup. In an Instagram post, he said: "Suffering the most serious injury a player can face in one of the most important matches in the history of my country and seeing it end like this, without being able to stay on the pitch and support my teammates until the final whistle, is something that will stay with me for the rest of my life." Manchester United also wished the player a speedy recovery, posting: "We all wish @ManuUgarte8 a successful recovery." Ugarte concluded: "Reaching rock bottom will make me stronger in every way and I truly believe that's what will happen. Without a doubt, when life wants you to stop, it finds a way to let you know. It's up to me to take the positive side of it. Success in life is about starting over every time you fall."
