Xhaka should remain at Sunderland despite Chelsea's interest
Granit Xhaka is expected to remain at Sunderland, despite Chelsea's interest and a rejected proposal. He reaffirmed his commitment to the club after helping the team qualify for Europe.
Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka is expected to remain at the club this season despite interest from Chelsea. The Swiss midfielder, whose contract runs until 2028, was attracted by the possibility of reuniting with Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, with whom he worked at Bayer Leverkusen. Last week, Chelsea made an £8 million bid for Xhaka, which was rejected by Sunderland. Chelsea were expected to return with a better offer, but sources at Sunderland have informed BBC Sport that the 33-year-old is not for sale and, following discussions, Xhaka has reaffirmed his commitment to the Black Cats.

Chelsea have not given up on signing Xhaka and club sources claim the former Arsenal player is interested in a move to Stamford Bridge. However, it is not yet known whether the Blues will make a new offer for the player. Xhaka helped Sunderland qualify for Europe for the first time in 53 years last season following his arrival from Bayer Leverkusen. He made 34 Premier League appearances, helping the Black Cats to a seventh-place finish and a place in the Conference League. The Switzerland captain spent seven years at Arsenal, making 297 appearances, before joining Leverkusen in 2023, where he helped the club win their first Bundesliga title under Alonso. Xhaka is currently at the World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada with Switzerland, where he played in all of the team's games up until the 16th stage.
