World Cup 2026: Scotland cannot play in a draw or narrow defeat against Brazil

Scotland face Brazil in a crucial World Cup game where a draw or a narrow defeat could guarantee their passage to the group stage. The team's approach and mentality will be key to performance.

When Scotland face Brazil's famous yellow jersey in Miami, they will know that a draw is enough to reach the last 16 of the World Cup. Even a narrow defeat could well ensure they progress as one of the eight best third-placed teams. The Scottish fans' new obsession is the ranking of the third-placed teams in the World Cup, as everyone tries to work out what exactly would see the national team progress for the first time in their history.

Manager Steve Clarke and the players will be asked about their approach given this context, but how easy is it to play just to not lose? You'll probably be hard-pressed to find a coach or player who says they'll take the field aiming for anything other than a win. Those involved with Scotland will do the same in their pre-match interviews this week - and you can bet that's true. But with all the noise and chatter off the field, could there be a subconscious effect? As former Scotland player and manager Craig Levein told BBC Scotland: "I don't believe Steve will play for a draw because there's a dangerous element to it. Because you get into a mode where, if you concede a goal, it's difficult to change that mentality. I've been in that situation a number of times."

One of the situations mentioned was the game against the Czech Republic, 4-6-0 [in 2010], where a draw would have been a very good result. The game wasn't great and neither team threatened, but we lost the goal to a dead ball. So you can plan all you want to achieve a certain result, but football is so random that you have no guarantee it will happen. Levein believes Clarke's stance and approach to training, game plan and team selection will have more influence on the players' mindset than external talk about just needing a point.

The inclusion of striker Ben Gannon-Doak, for example, could send a message that Scotland will be more aggressive in attack. "You feel as a manager where the players are. You're looking at it and thinking: maybe if we add one more attacking player, it will give everyone the idea that it's time to take off the shackles and go for it. So, rather than Scotland's mentality being affected by the desired result, is a cautious game plan - even trying to win every game - more of a problem?

Against Haiti, Clarke's team had just 46% possession - and that fell to 40% against Morocco. Scotland have managed just two shots on target so far. Defensively, they do not tend to press their opponents ferociously, with Scotland taking an average of 25 seconds to regain possession against Morocco, who on average won the ball eight seconds faster. Former Hibernian and Celtic midfielder Scott Allan said on the Scottish Football Podcast: "When you're constantly sitting back, players get into a certain mindset where they start to worry rather than having that true belief to go and create and score goals. You can keep a low block and still be aggressive. Is there a point where, once they [the opponent] get here, when they make a lateral pass, we can go with real purpose and try to win the ball back?"

Former Rangers and Motherwell midfielder Andy Halliday agrees that Scotlandneed to find more urgency when defending as a team against Brazil. "When you're this team that wants to stay and frustrate, then you have to be as quick as possible in transitions," he said. "I think we need to be much more aggressive than we were without the ball. I think all the chances we created really came from us putting pressure on the Moroccan players and winning the ball back at the top of the field.
