Jonathan Tah's headed goal, which appeared to have given Germany the lead against Paraguay in extra time in the World Cup round of 16, was controversially disallowed following a VAR review. With the score tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes, the German defender rose high on the second stick and headed the ball into the back of the net. However, the referee was called to review the play due to a foul committed by Waldemar Anton on Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill.
Moroccan referee Jalal Jayed went to the screen to review the play and announced to the audience that a foul had been committed. Anton was found guilty of blocking Gill before Tah scored the goal. Former England captain Alan Shearer, who was commentating for the BBC, thought the foul was "very, very slight". He said: "I don't agree with that decision at all. He falls to the ground very easily. Yes, there was contact, but it's a contact sport. There are 13 bodies in the six-yard box, for me that's not a foul. The goalkeeper took advantage [of the contact]. Very, very light, that is, very light."
Former World Cup final assistant referee Darren Cann agreed with Shearer's assessment. "That's slight, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was disallowed. That's next to nothing - a small block on the goalkeeper, I suspect it was for a block on the goalkeeper."
With the goal disallowed, the score remained 1-1 and Paraguay ended up advancing by beating Germany in a dramatic penalty shootout, eliminating the four-time world champions from the competition. Paraguay thus advances to the round of 16, where they will face France or Sweden next Saturday.
