Brest announces Julien Lachuer as new coach after Eric Roy's death
Brest have officially hired Julien Lachuer as the team's new coach, following the selection of Eric Roy before his death. Lachuer, who was Roy's assistant, will have his first experience as a head coach.
Stade Brestois have officially announced the appointment of Julien Lachuer as the professional team's new coach for the next two seasons, at a delicate time following the death of Eric Roy. Roy, who had been in charge of Brest since January 2023, passed away earlier this month after a three-and-a-half-year battle with pancreatic cancer. During his time there, he led the team to its first qualification for European competitions, finishing the season in third place in Ligue 1, thus guaranteeing a place in the Champions League.
In a total of 142 matches at the helm of the club, Roy achieved 60 victories, with a success rate of 42.3%, although the team finished last season in 12th place, just seven points above the relegation zone. Lachuer, who had already been Roy's assistant since his arrival at the club, was chosen by Roy himself to take charge of the team.
“Stade Brestois is pleased to officially announce the appointment of Julien Lachuer as coach of the professional team for two seasons,” they said in a statement. "Desired by Eric Roy before his passing on June 17, the responsibility of continuing coach Nicois' work was accepted by Julien Lachuer, just days before the scheduled resumption on Thursday, July 2. This will be Lachuer's first experience as head coach, being his first game of the season against newly promoted Le Mans. As a player, Lachuer played as a goalkeeper and ended his career at Brest, where he played between 2005 and 2010.
