Jan Paul Van Hecke: Tottenham agree £52m deal with Brighton for defender
Tottenham Hotspur have finalized a £52 million deal to sign Dutch defender Jan Paul Van Hecke from Brighton. The player, who stood out last season, is looking to reunite with his former coach Roberto de Zerbi in the new team.

Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a £52 million deal with Brighton for Dutch defender Jan Paul Van Hecke. The 26-year-old player participated in his team's 2-2 draw against Japan last Sunday, in the World Cup. Van Hecke has one year remaining on his contract at Brighton and has shown no interest in renewing it. Brighton had already rejected a previous bid for the player, who joined the club from NAC Breda in 2020. However, they have now accepted Tottenham's offer, which should allow Van Hecke to reunite with his former manager Roberto de Zerbi in London. The deal includes a significant sell-on clause, ensuring Brighton will profit even more should Spurs sell the player in the future. Van Hecke made 131 appearances for Brighton and started 36 of 38 Premier League games last season, helping the team secure eighth place and European qualification for the second time in the club's history. Tottenham have already made signings to strengthen De Zerbi's squad, aiming to improve their performance after two consecutive seasons in 17th place. Scottish defender Andy Robertson has already been signed from Liverpool, and Argentine defender Marcos Senesi has also agreed to leave Bournemouth. With the arrivals of Van Hecke and Senesi, De Zerbi will have several options for central defense. However, with no European football next season, how many Tottenham defenders will still be in London at the start of the 2026-27 season? Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Kevin Danso and Radu Dragusin are already at the club, as well as young defender Luka Vuskovic, who spent last season on loan at Hamburg, but is also a target for Brighton and several European clubs. Spurs fans are yet to see Vuskovic in competitive action, but they will be able to get their first glimpse of the youngster's potential when England face Croatia on Wednesday. Romero, who like Senesi is representing Argentina at the World Cup, has now been at Tottenham for five seasons and captained the team to their first trophy in 17 years, beating Manchester United in the Europa League final in 2025. However, his availability - whether through suspension or injury - has been a frustration for fans, as he played just 23 Premier League games last season and 18 the season before. Dragusin has also been linked with a departure - the Romanian reportedly turned down Bayern Munich to join Tottenham in January 2024, but an anterior cruciate ligament injury hampered his career at the club and the new signings could push him further down the pecking order. If Romero and Dragusin leave the club, De Zerbi will have Senesi, Van Hecke, Van de Ven and Danso, as well as having to decide whether Vuskovic stays, is loaned or sold permanently. It's worth remembering that Van de Ven played at left-back in the same Netherlands defense as Van Hecke in the match against Japan, but Spurs are not short of options in that position either, with Robertson set to arrive. Or, with all these new signings, could De Zerbi opt for a line of five defenders?
