Liverpool activate Osasuna's Victor Munoz release clause for £34m
Liverpool agreed to sign Spanish striker Victor Munoz from Osasuna after triggering his €40 million release clause. Munoz did a good job for Osasuna and will be the club's first reinforcement under new coach Andoni Iraola.

Liverpool are set to confirm the signing of Spanish striker Victor Munoz from Osasuna after activating his €40m (around £34.6m) release clause. Newcastle United were also interested in the 22-year-old, but Liverpool prevailed in the race for his signature. Sporting Director Richard Hughes and Fenway Sports Group Football CEO Michael Edwards were instrumental in bringing the deal to fruition.
The club will pay the termination amount in two installments. Munoz has already undergone medical examinations in the United States, after permission from the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) for him to do so while he was with the team at the World Cup. He is part of Spain's squad for this summer's competition and the Liverpool squad were at Spain's camp in Atlanta for the test.
The striker will sign a six-year contract with Liverpool and become the club's first signing since Andoni Iraola's appointment as manager earlier this month. Liverpool have been looking to bolster their attacking options since Mohamed Salah's departure at the end of last season. Hugo Ekitike will miss the start of next season with an Achilles injury, while Federico Chiesa is expected to leave the club this summer.

Liverpool's interest in Munoz increased following the signing of Andoni Iraola. He is seen as a versatile striker, able to play as a left winger, right winger and even as a center forward. Munoz made four appearances for Real Madrid's first team, including two in the last Club World Cup, before moving to Osasuna last season for €5 million. Madrid maintained a 50% clause in the sale, meaning they are set to receive €20 million from the deal.
Known for his speed and objectivity, Munoz stood out at Osasuna by scoring seven goals in 36 matches last season. The player made his debut for the Spanish national team in March, scoring a goal in his first match in a friendly victory against Serbia. He was called up to Luis de la Fuente's World Cup squad but did not feature in the two warm-up games in June or the opening match against Cape Verde.
Despite Munoz's imminent signing, Liverpool remain interested in securing the signing of RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande. Diomande demonstrated his potential in an impressive performance in his team's opening World Cup win against Ecuador. However, he won't be cheap, as Leipzig sources claim it would take a fee in excess of €130m (£112.3m, $151m) to convince them to sell.
